A Self Sustaining Fully Integrated Sewage Treatment Plant

All sewage treatment plants (STP) in the world require the operation costs to sustain their performance. Most of the governments are able to pay for the initial capital costs but find it difficult to maintain the high operation cost of the STP

The operation cost of any STP will normally include the electrical power consumption, the labour and management cost, the chemical consumption, the spare parts replacement cost and the sludge disposal cost. The electrical power consumption and the sludge disposal costs make up the major expenses of the operation cost. The operation cost varies according to the types and locations of STP.

Pollution Engineerings (M) Sdn. Bhd. (PESB) had developed a profit making large scale fully integrated STP system, called “HiWaveTM STP”. Instead of spending money to operate the STP, the HiWaveTM STP actually helps the operator to make profit! It is a real breakthrough!


WHAT IS HIWAVE STP?

The HiWave-STP consists of the following 3 major component technologies:-

  1. The Standard STP.
    The STP can be any standard types, such as Conventional Activated Sludge system(CAAS), Extended Aeration Activated Sludge system, Sequential Batch Reactor system(SBR), Oxidation Ditch system, High Rate Trickling Filter system (HRTF), Rotating Biological Contactor system (RBC).

    In fact, the system that produces more sludge is preferred for the HiWaveTM STP. Thus, the CAAS, the SBR, the HFTF and the RBC are the preferred systems. The primary and the secondary sludge from the STP can be used to produce biogas and electricity.

  2. The Biogas/Cogen System
    The biogas/cogen system is quite a standard system already in used by many large scales STP, to produce electricity to supplement the electrical power consumption of the STP. The primary and secondary sludge generated from the STP are fed directly to the anaerobic digesters to produce biogas, which in turn is fed to the gas engine or turbine to generate electricity.

    However, the electricity produced from the sludge alone is insufficient to power the whole STP. In order to generate sufficient electricity to power the whole STP and the other component technologies, the STP owner must allow importing food waste and other biomass from the city.
    The quantum of imported biomass is determined by the total power consumption of the whole integrated STP system. The HiWaveTM STP does not require outside electricity supply.

  3. The HiWaveTM Compo System
    The HiWaveTM Compo system is a new technology, developed and patented by PESB, which can convert the sludge from the anaerobic digesters and other biomass into dry granular organic fertilizer, within 7 days. It is a continuos process. The HiWaveTM Compo system uses the Aerobic Thermophilic Fermentation (ATF) Process, which is different from the conventional composting process.

    The HiWaveTM Compo system has a built in NPK blending system that can produce organic based fertilizer with different NPK values suitable for different agriculture purposes. The specially blended fertilizer is more effective for plant growth and thus can fetch a higher market price.
    The sales of the high quality dry organic based fertilizer combined with the self generating electric power will make the operation of the HiWaveTM STP not only sustainable but profitable!

    BENEFITS ADOPTING HIWAVE STP

    The HiWave-STP consists of the following 3 major component technologies:-

    • It is now profitable to operate a large scale municipal HiWaveTM STP. This will certainly help to reduce the expenditures of the municipality.

    • The profits from the operation of the HiWaveTM STP can be used to improve the quality of life for the local residents.

    • The HiWaveTM STP will help the municipality to solve the environmental problem of disposal of sewage sludge and part of the biomass in the municipal solid waste (MSW). Less biomass will be disposed to the landfills and thus extending the life-span of the landfills.

    • The municipality will also help the local farmers to produce better quality and value added agriculture produce, which will also improve the farmers’ incomes.

    • The municipality will help to reduce the dependence on the national power generators to supply electricity for their STP, and thus helping them not to expand their production capacity.

    • The HiWaveTM STP is qualified as a CDM project. It helps to reduce the green house gas generation.

    • The HiWaveTM STP can be applied not only to new STP but also to old STP with extra land to accommodate the biogas/cogen system and the HiWaveTM Compo Fertilizer plant.

    • The HiWaveTM STP is very compact in size which required only very small land area.
